Университет Суррея основан в 1966 году на базе политехнического института, действующего с XIX века. Вуз располагает большим и зеленым кампусом всего в 35 минутах езды от Лондона. Под эгидой университета создан Научно-исследовательский парк, в который входят больше сотни компаний. Порядка 400 млн. фунтов было вложено в строительство и оснащение кампуса.
